Abigail Nnaji

About

Inspired by colors and fascinated with lines, Abigail Nnaji allows herself an indulgence in expression that has resulted in steady growth. A student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in painting. Her style is not only influenced by the academy but also by her constant exposure through cultural interactions. Abigail has participated in several exhibitions and won notable awards for her role in representing the female figure as a prominent member of contemporary society. Among these awards and interactions are her second place award in the Chinese embassy’s national competition and sponsored learning program to china. Her pieces feature themes in serenity, beauty, identity and love, as she is often exploring social perceptions in new light. Her work is collected around the world. Her ongoing research is inspired by Chinese paper cutting which she has recently travelled to China to learn.

In the dynamic landscape of the 21st century where the idea of the woman’s role in society is being challenged more than ever, the images created by the artist represent a story from Nigeria. This story is particularly important in the context of Nigeria’s economy where women are being forced into new roles not as a matter of choice by men but as a matter of necessity.
